What is motivational interviewing (MI)?

MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion (Miller & Rollnick, 2013, p. 29).

MI can equip school staff with the skills and understanding necessary to have conversations with a young person that enhance connection and encourages behavioural change.

In a school context, MI is not a substitute for professional counselling.

If you have any concerns for the wellbeing of one of your students, refer them immediately to an appropriate service, counsellor or social worker.

How does it work?

Motivational interviewing (MI) guides individuals to reflect on and verbalise their own reasons for and against change. It helps them explore how their current behavior or health status may affect their life goals or core values. MI supports people making informed and thoughtful life choices, even if the choice is not to change.
